As Halloween approaches, and the shops are full of ghosts and ghouls, dressing up becomes part of “trick or treat” and it has become something of a celebration, I was going to write something about the psychology of dressing up and how it can be psychologically good for us, but in fact, I think we have a Halloween all of our own in our industry.
ITV recently did a series of surgical disasters resulting from our population taking the option of cheap plastic surgery in Türkiye. You can still see them all on ITVX. Additionally, Coronation Street is covering the same story, resulting in Bethany ending up with a permanent stoma bag. And then a poor lady ended up losing her life in Gloucester, resulting from non-invasive BBL for £1500.00. You can’t believe everything on Facebook, but you probably know of someone who had a bad outcome in Türkiye – or even locally. Frankly, if these aren’t horror stories I don’t know what is.
There is plenty of media coverage about these terrible events, and I don’t intend to rattle on about all this, but what can we do? The answer for now, is very little, although occasionally, there are petitions that we can sign. In 2021, under Jeremy Hunt, then the Health Secretary, there was a new Health and Social Care Act, which was the initial call for licensing. You may remember from an earlier Blog, but the change in Government has probably set this back by a number of years .Beauty Matters recently had an article about What the new Government means for the British Beauty Industry, which you may find interesting. The British Beauty Council, National Hair and Beauty Foundation (NHBF). CIBTAC, and HABIA to name but a few are still on the case, so it is worth following their posts to see what is happening.
There are organisations who are working hard to protect the public by forming a membership for authentic practitioners of advanced aesthetics(injectables), which we should all be advising our clients to visit if these are services not provided by ourselves. I have listed these below.
Save Face– it is worth keeping up to date with this. The link I have included is about media reports, but you can also follow licensing and sign up for their newsletter on the same website.
JCCP – have recently drawn up some guidance for Buttock augmentation and other contouring services, which is also worthy of your attention.
All this information is freely available on the internet.
I hope some of this is useful to you, do have a look, and maybe next year for Halloween – I can concentrate on the joys of “dressing up” with the psychological benefits.
